It is particularly interesting in retrospect to listen to an interview QuestPoint n The Mix had with leading author and Green Career Expert Carol McClelland last year where she lays out an assessment of where the green age is relative to the Industrial age.

As more and more wind turbines are erected across the open plains, farmlands, and mountain ridges of the United States, the need for ironworkers with specialized construction skills has naturally grown, says the Iron Workers International Union.

In fact, ironworkers have been erecting wind turbines for decades. What is new is a need for independent certifications-driven largely by increased scrutiny of the wind energy sector – meant to improve safety and quality across the industry. In response, the Iron Workers International Union (www.ironworkers.org) – working with the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT) – is offering wind turbine training programs for union ironworkers to develop key construction skills. Mongolian villages go solar

In cooperation with the World Bank’s Renewable Energy for Rural Access Project two Mongolian villages  Gobi-Altai and Bayantooroi, which are both located in the western Gobi Desert region of have gone solar. The project was handled by Kyocera because of the company’s years of experience in the solar energy business in Mongolia, and the durability of its high-quality modules to harsh 1006 tqgs 01 150x150 Mongolian villages go solarweather conditions. The systems were supplied and installed by the company’s subsidiary, KYOCERA (Tianjin) Sales & Trading Corporation. The installations are among the largest stand-alone solar power generating systems in the world. They are providing a total of 305.1kW of solar power.  The systems were installed this summer and are now currently helping to provide electricity for the daily needs of the local residents. The World Bank project aims to increase electricity and improve reliability of electricity service through the use of solar energy to help improve the living conditions of the herder population and off-grid village communities.

In 1983, the company started by installing a system in the village of Kankoi, Pakistan; in 1985, another system for rural electrification in Gansu Province, China; and a solar-powered pump for an irrigation station in Thailand the following year.

Kyocera has been active in the solar energy business in Mongolia for many years, taking part in a project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to supply portable solar power generating systems for 200 nomadic herding families’ yurts between 1992 and 1996. Furthermore, in 2011, with the Japanese government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), Kyocera modules will be used for a 453.18kW grid-tie system for the Genghis Khan International Airport in Ulan Bator City.

Mayor Reed sets new sustainable vision for Atlanta



kasimportrait Mayor Reed sets new sustainable vision for AtlantaWith the start of Atlanta’s Sustainability Week, now through October 29, 2010 Mayor Kasim Reed set out a new  goal for Atlanta to be a top 10 US Sustainable City. The release of Mayor Reed and the City of Atlanta’s Sustainability Plan is the first event of the city’s first Sustainability Week, which runs Oct. 25-29. Each day of the week includes daily activities and programs highlighting different focus areas of the plan, such as water quality and conservation, energy efficiency, jobs growth, local foods, and electric vehicles.

By implementing the plan the City of Atlanta will reduce toxic emissions by 25 percent and reduce energy use for existing municipal operations 15 percent both by 2020. Renewable energy will represent  five percent  of total municipal use by 2015.
Additionally the plan will bring local food within 10 minutes of 75 percent of all residents by 2020. “Being a more sustainable city not only protects and preserves the environment, it makes economic sense for the city,” said Mandy Mahoney, Atlanta’s first Director of Sustainability. “It helps drive financial savings and efficiency and creates jobs.”  The City of Atlanta’s Office of Sustainability already has established a strong track record of success. One of Atlanta’s first wins in sustainability was to become the first city in Georgia to determine its municipal carbon footprint, which occurred in 2008. By 2010, Atlanta reduced its footprint by 12.5 percent.

“I believe the City of Atlanta should be a leading example of how a major urban municipality can take greater responsibility for efficient energy and water use, the conservation of green space, and the promotion of a healthier, cleaner and greener environment,” Mayor Reed said. “It is vital we take concrete, measurable actions around sustainability now to protect the future of our city.”

Solar Train Stations on the way all abroad

Plans call for the service to run from Anaheim and end up at a new Transbay Station in San Francisco. Trains will travel between LA and San Francisco in under 2 hours and 40 minutes, at speeds of up to 220 mph. I wonder if there will be a solar power stations used like the one in Beijing. The South Railway Station began operations in 2008. It has become the largest and the most technologically sophisticated train station in Asia. Beijing South Railway Station is huge, it has 13 platforms, 24 rails and has over 3200 solar panels installed on its’ circular roof. It can accommodate up to 15 thousand passengers. It is also one of the most environmentally friendly railway stations in the world. Its solar panels will produce as much as 100 hundred kilowatt-hours of power every day.

The solar energy will be used by the trains and station servicing both conventional and high-speed trains, representing a unique application of solar power in Europe. More than 16,000 solar panels will be installed on the roof of the high-speed rail tunnel stretching just over 2 miles long. The tunnel is primarily used by the high-speed train connecting Amsterdam and Paris via Brussels. Commenting on the intricacies of the project, Patrick Decuyper, CEO of Enfinity Europe said that a large technical team will install more than 16,000 monocrystalline solar panels (245 Wp per panel) on the roof with a special ballast tile structure, with no rooftop perforations required.

The roof’s total surface area is roughly equivalent to 8 football fields and is estimated to produce 3.3 mega watts of electricity per year.The project completion is scheduled for December 2010. The total investment budget is $20.1 million. There you have it solar powered train stations powering the station and the trains….California all abroad!

DeepIntoAfrica.com has been awarded sole rights to bring volunteers from North America to assist with the Tuli Conservation Project, a research and monitoring initiative that aims to help preserve the pristine Tuli Block of Southern Africa. Now this is  ecotourism in full effect. The Tuli Block consists of a largely uninhabited area traversing the borders of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It is home to large herds of elephants—which will be central to the data collection activities—as well as hyenas, lions, buffalo, leopards, baboons and more. After paying a nominal fee, volunteers are housed, fed and instructed in game tracking, animal and plant identification, GPS mapping, data collection and more. All these skills are applied immediately in the Tuli wilderness as the groups go out to track wildlife and collect data.

“This project is unlike anything else we have been able to offer in the past said” Diederik Van ‘t Hof. “We are tremendously excited about being able to give people the opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty and excitement that is the Southern African wilderness, in a whole new way.” The participant volunteers come from all parts of the world.

Urban Farming in Hungry City LA



hollywood hills la ca 300x225 Urban Farming in Hungry City LAAs more and more attention is being paid to the slow food movement, home food gardens, urban farming and yes vertical farms; here comes: Why is LA a Hungry City? The meeting is sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The interest in urban agriculture in a city such as Los Angeles is interesting particularly given its unique assets with respect to sunshine and it’s transportation problems. In part the meeting will deal with what laws and policies interface with the possibility for growing food in Los Angeles and what are the constraints of moving food, distributing food, and accessing food?

Like other major metropolitan areas Los Angeles is already stressing from population, water, transportation and energy issues: So an increased awareness of the relationship between food and health issues along with the proliferation of fast food venues have added to the urgency for solutions.

On hand for the Thursday, October 28 7pm meeting are Micheal Pinto, Shelley Marks, and Nicola Twilley; each discussing various perspectives on food production in the city of Angels. For example, Shelley Marks who has been a life-long community activist and volunteer, working on  local and global issues pulled together a small group of like-minded friends and neighbors and formed Urban Farming Advocates (UFA) in 2009. The purpose of the group is to change  laws in Los Angeles that restricted urban farming in residential zones. UFA created the Food & Flowers Freedom Act and worked with Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti to get these zoning changes adopted.
