Solar Energy A Source For Brighter Earth Days

Solar Energy A Source For Brighter Earth Days

EarthDay 290x300 Solar Energy A Source For Brighter Earth DaysAs we welcome the 41st Earth Day it is interesting to look around and take stock of where we are;  as going green continues to go mainstream. It is almost impossible not to heed  two events that are calling on all human beings around the world to bring about change to our environmental mentality.

The most recent has been  the devastating Tsunami that hit Japan and that subsequently  caused the explosion at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.  And  of course the other  was the catastrophic BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf  of Mexico. At this point you might expect that  the blame for the events should lay at the feet of big oil and nuclear power companies, after all they build them. And yet the responsibility for allowing toxic energy producers to continue, lies with each of  us. Much of the early debates about the environment have centered around the idea of saving the birds, trees and environment, as if humans aren’t a part of it.  But what new believers of environmental change are conveying is that  what we are talking about is saving the earth so humans can live here.

Solar and other renewable energy sources such as wind and biomass offer a far, far less destructive method for providing the energy we need, and do so in a way that provide air we can breathe; water we can drink and an earth that’s healthy enough to sustain life for all living creatures. In that regards California and other states and cities are implementing attractive and innovative incentive programs to  encourage renewable investments. The hope is that  this will lead to even healthier and brighter Earth Days in the future.

Bently Reserve1 300x225 S F Green Film Festival Features The 4th Revolution: Energy AutonomyThe San Francisco Green Film Festival will launch March 3-6, 2011 and will be the first-ever festival of its kind on the West Coast presenting inspiring programs and discussions that link films and media arts with environmental advocacy and activism.
The Festival will include screenings of over 60 premieres from around the globe and kicks off with an Opening Night Green Carpet Gala on Thursday, March 3rd at the beautiful LEED-certified Bently Reserve (formerly the City’s U.S. Federal Reserve). In celebration of the Opening Night’s “plastic pollution theme,”  the Festival will screen the Bay Area premiere of the award-winning film BAG IT, in partnership with Berkeley’s Plastic Pollution Coalition.

”San Francisco is universally regarded as an epicenter of both the global Green Movement and as an activist and issue conscious film community,” says Rachel Caplan, the Festival Founder and Director. “This amazingly diverse city has many film festivals but none that directly and solely addresses these issues and audiences – The San Francisco Green Film Festival grew out of the need to fill that void.”

Festival screenings and events will take place at the Landmark Theatres Embarcadero Center Cinema and the Bently Reserve. These venues, in close proximity to each other, will create a dynamic hub at the Embarcadero, with an exceptional inaugural line-up including Bay Area premieres of award winners and audience favorites from the world’s top film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, SxSW and Toronto.

THE 4TH REVOLUTION

The Festival’s Closing Night film, German Director Carl A. Fechner’s The 4th Revolution: Energy Autonomy, is deemed “…the most inspirational, solutions-based environmental film out there” by the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Ramsey TechNet Applauds President Obamas Call for Greater Innovation

TechNet, the bipartisan political network of CEOs that promotes the growth of the innovation economy has applauded President Barack Obama for emphasizing the vital role that competitiveness and innovation must play in tonight’s State of the Union speech. What follows is a statement from TechNet President and CEO Rey Ramsey about Obama’s speech:

“President Obama laid out a clear, rational narrative that for America to win the future we must build a foundation of investments and policies that ensure our country’s leadership in the global economy.  We applaud the President’s call for smart policies such as improved investments in research and development, education, clean energy and sensible tax reform to make our businesses more competitive.

Certainly, today’s budgetary environments are a challenge – and many worthy programs will have to tighten their belts. But we cannot abandon our responsibilities to the next generation. We must continue to carefully and intelligently invest in those areas that will help drive today’s economic recovery and tomorrow’s economic prowess. We stand ready to work with the Administration and Congress to ensure that America remains the leader in the world economy for generations to come and seizes on this “Sputnik moment.”

LA Boost Power From Clean Renewable Energy

LA Boost Power From Clean Renewable Energy

antonio 300x225 LA Boost Power From Clean Renewable EnergyLOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, joined by environmental leaders and representatives from the LosTAC4768 300x199 LA Boost Power From Clean Renewable Energy Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), to  announce  the achievement of a major milestone — providing 20% of the City’s power from renewable energy sources in 2010. Mayor Villaraigosa said, “When I became Mayor, I set a goal to generate 20% of the City’s power from renewable energy sources by 2010 and I am proud to say that we have achieved that goal. We went from worst to first and quadrupled our renewable energy portfolio in a few short years while also keeping our rates lower than other major utilities. Today’s announcement illustrates that the DWP is a national leader in cost-effective, environmentally responsible and reliable energy.” “This is a historic and substantial accomplishment for the Department of Water and Power and the City of Los Angeles,” said Austin Beutner, LADWP General Manager. “We need to continue to reduce the impact of DWP operations on the environment and do it in an economically sustainable manner.”

The 20% by 2010 goal has been achieved through a combination of major projects and power agreements made during the Mayor’s administration. In June 2009, LADWP began full operation of the Pine Tree Wind Power Plant — the nation’s largest wind farm owned by a municipal utility, in the Tehachapi Mountains. Wind power comprised nearly 50% of all LADWP’s renewable energy in 2010 with small hydro-electric contributing 30%, geothermal/biofuels, 22%, and solar, 1%.

Reaching this milestone is the latest in a series of significant achievements by LADWP to meet the goals of Mayor Villaraigosa’s GREEN LA Action Plan to lead the national fight against global warming. In conjunction with increasing renewables and energy efficiency, a key factor in reducing greenhouse gases and promoting a cleaner environment is ending reliance on coal-generated power. LADWP is currently making this transition away from coal and in 2010, only 39% of its power portfolio came from coal. LADWP is in the process of divesting of the Navajo Generating Station in Arizona by 2014, which will reduce carbon emissions by an additional 26%.
