The S$11 million pilot is estimated to have a system size of 2 mega-watt (MW), and will be the first of its kind in the region.The pilot project aims to assess the feasibility of installing floating solar PV systems on water, as an alternative to rooftops. In partnership with private sector companies, EDB and PUB will examine the cost effectiveness of these floating PV systems and ascertain the improvement in performance of the solar modules, due to the expected cooling effect from the water. PUB will also study potential secondary benefits of these installations, such as reduced water evaporation and algae growth in our reservoirs.

Said Dr Beh Swan Gin, Managing Director of EDB, “This pilot project exemplifies Singapore’s continuing efforts to overcome our resource constraints through innovative renewable energy solutions. The project also enables cleantech companies to address a sophisticated need, which if successful, can be scaled up and commercialised globally.”

At the ceremony, the inter-agency Energy Innovation Programme Office (EIPO), co-led by EDB and the Energy Market Authority (EMA), awarded a third wave of five private sector projects with the Solar Pioneer Award. The award recognises solar installations in Singapore that are pioneering in terms of system design, size and installation techniques, and help to build solar system integration capabilities.The five projects are Keppel DHCS’ District Cooling Systems Plant at Changi Business Park, Hyflux’s Innovation Centre, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals’ plant, OUB Centre Limited’s One Raffles Place Tower 2 and UOL Group’s Upper Pickering Hotel & Office Development.

They have achieved and demonstrated a record voltage for organic photovoltaic cells that means these highly flexible, low cost solar cells can now be devolved for commercial uses in a wide range of consumer electronics. The Company’s most recent advance in the development of its organic photovoltaic (OPV) cell technology is the realisation of cells with open-circuit voltages in excess of 4 volts for the first time. Molecular Solar’s research team believe this is a record for an OPV device. Dr Ross Hatton, Research Director of the company commented:
This is an important advance. We are now very close to having highly flexible organic photovoltaic cells that will be capable of delivering electrical energy at a voltage suitable for recharging lithium ion batteries that are widely used in portable consumer electronics. Remarkably, this high voltage is achieved using a cell with only 4 junctions (sub-cells)’’.University of Warwick researcher Professor Tim Jones, who is Chief Technology Officer of Molecular Solar, added:

“The first generation of organic photovoltaics will be exceptionally well matched to consumer electronics applications. The advantage of Molecular Solar’s high voltage cells is that a single cell can be used with no requirement to connect multiple cells in series for these applications, saving manufacturing cost. ’’Andrew Oldfield, Head of Cleantech at Mercia Fund Management said, “We were attracted to Molecular Solar’s unique approach to realizing truly flexible, environmentally sustainable photovoltaics that are well matched to the burgeoning portable consumer electronics market.”

The revised plan, the Supplement to the Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for Solar Energy Development (Solar PEIS), reinforces and improves upon Interior’s work to establish meaningful solar energy zones with transmission solutions and incentives for solar energy development within those zones. The blueprint’s early, comprehensive analysis will ultimately make for faster, better permitting of large-scale solar projects on public lands.

“Between the proposed solar energy zones, the flexible variance process, the additional state-based planning efforts, and the commitment to process pending applications, Interior is taking an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ approach to building a strong solar energy economy now and into the future,” said Deputy Secretary David J. Hayes.

It is now heading for Mumbai as part of its 18-month journey around the world.The boat, which started its journey on September 27, 2010 from the port of Monaco, will travel across the Indian Ocean before finally returning to Monaco in May next year. The  goal of PlanetSolar is to be the first “solar” boat” to circumnavigate the globe  driven by a silent, pollution-free electrical engine powered exclusively by solar energy.

Distance covered during the last 24 hours (from 20 o’clock till 20 o’clock): 0 miles (0 km). Today the crew had a day off after the intensive work during the last weeks. Nevertheless, Erwann and I discussed our route for the crossing of the Bay of Bengal. For the moment, all options remain open. We discussed 3 or 4 possible routes, namely, two direct ones, one southern route and one northern route. The sun is going to be rather modest, however, the wind and the currents are apparently going to be favorable. On our route there will be some islands, which we will be able to visit and explore. Moreover, in case of thunderstorms we could find a shelter there and recharge our batteries.
