Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon speaking yesterday at the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development outlined a series of actions he believes the global community must take over the next five years to build the future we want. In a speech to the General Assembly last September Mr. Ban presented five imperatives or generational opportunities that must be addressed to ensure a better future for the world’s people. These are sustainable development; preventing and mitigating conflicts, human rights abuses and the impacts of natural disasters; building a safer and more secure world; supporting countries in transition; and working to engage the talents of women and young people. Today I want to share with you an action agenda for the coming five years, he told the Assembly as he returned to the rostrum to brief Member States on his vision for his second term.

Mr. Ban also announced that the UN will work with Member States to make Antarctica a World Nature Preserve and that he will appoint a new special representative for youth. Among his other proposals is the convening of a first-of-its-kind World Humanitarian Summit to help share knowledge and establish common best practices, and the creation of a New UN Partnerships Facility to harness the full power of transformative partnerships across the world body. Waves of change are surging around us, he told the Assembly. If we navigate wisely, we can create a more secure and sustainable future for all. Russian Students On Global Energy Adventure

The Energy of Adventure, organized by the non-profit partnership Global Energy, announced in Moscow that two young Russians have won a round-the-world trip to discover the most interesting energy-related stories of the planet. The two researchers, Maria Khromova, a young Muscovite engaged in the power industry, and Egor Goloshov, a future economist from Zlatoust will be taking a trip around the world to 21 countries over a period of three months. The project Energy of Adventure, instituted by the non-profit partnership Global Energy, got under way last November with a nationwide contest. Every day Egor and Maria will share with the global community their power industry impressions and findings, and their small adventures through social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

“Travelling around the world is always an interesting experience. I have been given this unique opportunity to tell the world about the most important energy-related discoveries, and it’s no secret that the power industry is an integral and key part of the economic stability of any country. I plan to use this unique material to write a scientific paper,” said Maria. Egor Goloshov began to think about energy conservation back in school. Egor has a special interest in renewable sources of energy such as tidal, wind and solar energy. Egor is currently a student enrolled in the Moscow Higher School of Economics. “I have always been aware that traditional sources of energy are running out. I am truly elated that I have been given the honour to tell people all over the world about what are definitely important problems in the modern-day power industry. I will do everything in my power, and even more, to meet the challenges entrusted to me under this project,” Egor pledged.

The main purpose of Energy of Adventure is to draw attention to contemporary global and local energy issues and inspire people to ponder over possible solutions. The president of the non-profit partnership Global Energy, Igor Lobovsky, commented: ” These are real steps and real efforts. This is why talented young people will be crisscrossing the globe in a bid to draw valuable experience from people, companies and authorities in the most far-flung corners of the planet. This is a great opportunity and also an onerous responsibility.”Interest in this unique project has been tremendous, with about 49,000 applications submitted from people in 50 cities across Russia.

In these difficult economic times, it is imperative that we support the taxpayers of this country and not the fossil fuel industry – one of the most powerful special interests in the world.”

Our federal government is set to give away over $110 billion in taxpayer dollars to the oil, gas, and coal industries over the next 10 years. That is totally absurd. When we have a $15.6 trillion national debt, we cannot afford it. When the five largest oil companies have made over $1 trillion in profits in the last decade, they don’t need it. When some of these same polluters have, in a given year, paid zero in federal income taxes and actually received IRS rebate checks worth millions, they don’t deserve it. When fossil fuels are the number one source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, creating a planetary crisis of global warming that is already causing devastating extreme weather disturbances, we can’t ignore it. As people throughout our country are demanding that we invest in energy efficiency and sustainable energy, and when Congress has instead allowed key sustainable energy incentives to expire even as Big Oil reaps billions in subsidies, it is time to change our national energy priorities. The common wisdom is wrong: There is no political “fault line” that divides Americans along party lines when it comes to clean energy issues and solutions. Majorities of Republicans, Independents and Democrats agree that the United States should move away from its reliance on dirty energy sources that foul the air and water and toward a future that makes greater use of clean energy sources, according to a major new ORC International survey conducted for the nonprofit and nonpartisan Civil Society Institute (CSI).

A key finding: More than three out of four Americans (76 percent) – including 58 percent of Republicans, 83 percent of Independents, and 88 percent of Democrats — think that the United States should move to a sustainable energy future through “a reduction in our reliance on nuclear power, natural gas and coal, and instead, launch a national initiative to boost renewable energy and energy efficiency.”

However, the bipartisan support for clean energy does not mean that Americans think that Washington, D.C. is on the same page with them. Solar And Electric Cars Key To Cleaning California Air

The American Lung Association released the State of the Air 2012 today, an annual report on air quality which lists both the cleanest and most polluted areas in the country. This year’s report shows that although California still has some of the worst air in the nation, continuous progress in reducing ozone and particulate pollution has resulted in the state’s air quality at its cleanest since the Lung Association’s annual report began 13 years ago. The findings reinforce the effectiveness of California’s progressive clean air laws and investments and the importance of the Clean Air Act. California must continue to demonstrate leadership by stepping up efforts to achieve clean and healthy air for all residents,” said Lung Association CEO Jane Warner. “This can be done by supporting implementation of state clean car, clean fuel and diesel regulations, redesigning our communities to reduce vehicle trips, and bringing more renewable energy to the state such as solar and wind power. We also urge all Californians to show strong support for the Clean Air Act and to make an effort to reduce air pollution in their communities by driving less, using cleaner transportation options like hybrid and electric vehicles, recycling, avoiding wood burning, and using energy efficient appliances.”

“This report shows that air pollution remains a serious health threat to too many Californians,” said Warner of the American Lung Association in California. “State of the Air 2012 shows that we’re making real and steady progress in the fight for clean air, but unhealthy levels of air pollution still exist, putting the health of millions Californians at risk. Much still needs to be done, and now is not the time to stop progress.”

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that cutting air pollution through the Clean Air Act will prevent at least 230,000 deaths and save $2 trillion annually by 2020.
