Next stop…Beijing!  For the first time, the international solar industry is assembling at Beijing’s China National Convention Center for Intersolar China, where the event makes its inauguration to the upcoming solar market in Eastern Asia. The exhibition’s extensive accompanying program not only gives visitors and exhibitors an overview of the latest product innovations, but also provides the perfect opportunity to network with the international solar industry and forge new contacts in new markets. The Intersolar China Conference, taking place from December 6–8 at the InterContinental Hotel in Beijing, invites industry professionals to join with experts in discussing the latest market trends and pioneering technologies – over 500 experts are expected in total.

chinese drum girl 232x300 Intersolar China Heading For BeijingIntersolar China is a continuation of the successful Intersolar exhibition series, the world’s leading exhibition series for the solar industry. This will be  the fourth event, joining Intersolar Europe in Munich, Intersolar North America in San Francisco and Intersolar India in Mumbai. It showcases all areas of solar power generation as well as the entire supply chain – from production through distribution to project development – including raw materials, production technologies, solar cells, photovoltaic modules, systems technology and components.

While the global face off between China and US solar manufacturers has yet to resolved, China still  remains  the world largest producer of solar panels and its economy is showing no signs of slowing. In addition to the latest developments in international solar markets, conference attendees also focus their attention on technological advances.  The spotlight is equally being shone on the topic of sustainability in PV production. Together with the PV Cycle initiative, the voluntary take-back and recycling program of the photovoltaic industry, the conference addresses the recycling of end-of-life solar modules.

Solar Powered Education On the Move In South Africa

Solar Powered Education On the Move In South Africa

South Africa Map 1 300x210 Solar Powered Education On the Move In South AfricaSamsung recently unveiled its first Solar Powered Internet School in South Africa to help 6a0148c7283f78970c0153929cd9e2970b 800wi 300x107 Solar Powered Education On the Move In South Africastudents in their studies without having to worry about electricity or Internet connectivity. The environmentally-friendly, transportable classroom is a perfect fit for Africa as it addresses one of the region’s biggest challenges – providing stable supply of electricity in rural areas.Despite differing views on the industry’s outlook, Samsung continues to believe solar energy can always be put to good use – not just generating electricity for residential or commercial utilization, but also for something really meaningful that can positively impact people’s lives.

6a0148c7283f78970c0153929d64eb970b 400wi1 300x200 Solar Powered Education On the Move In South AfricaA prime example of this is the use of solar power in education. Of course, solar-powered calculators, notebooks or other educational resources all contribute to improving the learning environment for young students. But what about an entire school or classroom that’s powered by solar energy? The 12-meter renovated container has solar panels installed on the roof that can generate nine hours of electricity a day, powering the electronic equipments inside the classroom. The classroom is equipped with a 50-inch electronic board, Internet-enabled solar-powered notebooks, Samsung’s Galaxy tablet computers as well as Wi-Fi cameras – all of which help enrich the learning experience. Up to 21 students can use the classroom, and the entire curriculums until grade 12 are stored in a central computer server enabling two-way learning by connecting to the Internet. The school can also be moved easily with a truck so that students in even the remotest of areas can continue their education.

The Solar Powered Internet School is just one of Samsung’s efforts to contribute to the local community with its innovative technologies and  plans to expand these schools to other regions throughout Africa.  Samsung last year identified solar as one of its new growth businesses, aiming to invest 6 trillion won ($5.4 billion) until 2020 to generate 10 trillion won in annual revenue by that year. Samsung SDI Co., which makes rechargeable batteries for mobile devices, is responsible for their solar business, currently has a capacity to produce 150 megawatts, with plans to increase production to 3 gigawatts by 2015.

Aquamantra On Greenwashing Environmental Lawsuit

 Aquamantra On Greenwashing Environmental Lawsuit

4c6af1a7e4fc7.image 196x300 Aquamantra On Greenwashing Environmental LawsuitIn response to California’s greenwashing lawsuit against its Balance and Aquamantra brands,  Danny Clark, President of ENSO, states, “Our industry is young, and we are still improving standards and dispelling false beliefs. Our products perform as we claim, and we have the data to prove it. The situation in California is a lack of education and misunderstanding new technologies; this is not an issue of false claims. We will take this opportunity to bring legislators up to speed with ENSO technologies and the value they bring to the environment.”
“The citizens of California and the environment deserve better,” stated Del Andrus, VP of ENSO. “History is full of examples where science has provided the facts to overcome false beliefs, a principle that ENSO will continue through the pioneering of new information, technology and education.”

At ENSO, we stand behind our claims and our mission to solve the world’s plastic pollution. Every one of us has contributed to this global problem, and it will take each of us, working together, to solve it. Companies like Aquamantra and Balance should be recognized for rising above status quo and implementing environmentally sound solutions. We do not claim that biodegradability is a silver bullet, but it is a huge step in the right direction. Consumers should be educated on the true impact of the products they are buying and have the opportunity to take that step. The lawsuit filed by Attorney General Kamala D. Harris was a first-of-its-kind “greenwashing” lawsuit against three companies that allegedly made false and misleading claims by marketing plastic water bottles as “100 percent biodegradable and recyclable.” Under California law, it is illegal to label a plastic food or beverage container as biodegradable. Plastic takes thousands of years to biodegrade and may never do so in a landfill.

SolarWorld Walks The Sustainability Talk

 SolarWorld Walks The Sustainability Talk

Good Stress Bad Stress EQ 300x200 SolarWorld Walks The Sustainability TalkSolarWorld, the largest U.S. solar panel manufacturer, has been recognized by three independent rankings as the global renewable-energy industry’s leader in sustainable corporate management, environmentally sound manufacturing and transparent financial reporting. The 2011 annual report of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for Germany, released in Frankfurt in mid-October, positions SolarWorld as the “Sector Leader” among its renewable energy peers. The CDP is a cooperative endeavour by more than 551 institutional investors worldwide to improve corporate transparency on greenhouse gas emissions affecting the climate. To this end, participating companies voluntarily report their annual C02 emissions and their strategies and steps toward climate protection. SolarWorld was deemed to most fully disclose its data, placing the company at the top of the CDP’s ranking.

Kevin Kilkelly, president of SolarWorld Americas said,  “As a company, we believe it is not valid to claim to sell a green product if your own business and manufacturing practices are not equally sustainable. Sustainability – environmental, social and fiscal – is at the very core of who we are and what we do.” Earlier this year, the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC), a watchdog group that has monitored the sustainability of the computer and solar industries, ranked SolarWorld first among world solar producers on a range of issues pivoting on sustainable performance. Among factors was the company’s voluntary compliance with reporting regimens encompassing a company’s entire impact, one of which is the U.N.-backed Global Reporting Initiative.

SolarWorld’s performance on the SVTC’s Solar Scorecard was the second year in a row in which the company ranked highest among producers of crystalline silicon solar technology on the only annual ranking of all solar companies on sustainable performance. For the high quality of its financial reporting, SolarWorld also received accolades in this year’s “Best Annual Reports” competition by Manager Magazine. With its integrated financial and sustainability reporting, which includes environmental and social key performance indicators, SolarWorld outpaced all other companies in the renewable-energy sector.
