Green innovators connect to create electric vehicles

Green Vehicles a plug electric car innovator and battery industry leader Leyden Energy have created a new technology partnership at Green Vehicles’ new factory location in Salinas, CA. The company has also recently received a $2.05 million grant from the California Energy Commission. President and co-founder Mike Ryan said “Green Vehicles is innovating in a new category of automobile, clean commuter mobility. The Triac directly addresses the growing demand among daily drivers who want affordable transportation that is the most environmentally responsible available.” The company aims for zero waste in manufacturing and vehicle recycling — making the Triac truly green, not just on the road, but throughout its product life cycle.

Leyden Energy will co-locate its battery test equipment alongside the manufacturing operations at the 80,000 square-foot Green Vehicles factory. This integration into the production process improves whole-system quality assurance and reduces production time. “Leyden Energy lithium-ion battery technology innovator formerly known as Mobius Power, sees great potential in partnering with Green Vehicles to address the needs of environmental and cost-conscious commuters,” said Leyden Energy CEO Aakar Patel. “Our high energy-density, highly reliable battery technology is a perfect fit for efficient, lightweight automotive applications like the Triac.”

Green Vehicles was born out of necessity in 2007. The company’s founders wanted all-electric transportation options for their day-to-day needs, but no practical solutions then existed. Green Vehicles has been building and shipping vehicles based on lithium-ion battery technology since 2009.

Yo New York City greens up and so does Yo Valley

Let’s give it up for green city New York, New York. Just a few days ago Mayor Bloomberg and other city officials broke ground on a new municipal recycling facility in Sunset Park that will process all of the city’s metal, glass and plastic recyclables. The opening represents another step for New York in going green. The Sims Municipal Recycling Facility on the Brooklyn waterfront will minimize the distance that collection trucks travel between pick-up sites and receiving centers and allow Sims to expand its barge and rail-based transport systems which will eliminate over 260,000 vehicle miles traveled annually from New York City roadways. The project will create 100 new jobs when the facility is opened, which is expected in December 2011; with 11,000 more to follow over the next 10 years.

“This state-of-the-art facility is another great example of repurposing our Brooklyn waterfront. And we’re not just talking trash here – this facility will promote recycling, take garbage-hauling trucks off our already overburdened streets and highways, and create jobs as well,” said Borough President Markowitz. “It’s a win-win for everybody, and proves yet again why, when it comes to recycling, Brooklyn and New York City make everyone else ‘green’ with envy.”

Selldorf Architects of the project designer created the facility to be sustainable. It includes green roofs, renewable solar and wind energy production, on-site stormwater treatment, and landscaping that serves to offset heat and provide a pleasing visual aesthetic for the surrounding community. The project will revitalize Brooklyn’s waterfront industrial space, improve pedestrian access to the waterfront by adding 22 acres of new open space, and reduce truck traffic throughout the region by 70,000 truck trips annually. An onsite Visitor Education Center will welcome school groups and visitors who can learn about recycling. It will operate 24 hours a day, six days a week.

Blue jeans go green

Looks as if everyone’s getting into going green. Gap has just announced from Blue to Green. Gap wants shoppers to gather their old jeans and bring them to a local Gap store where they will receive 30% off new “1969″ jeans purchases just in time for fall.

Today through October 20, Gap and Cotton Incorporated are teaming up to collect old denim, which will be given a “new life” by being converted into UltraTouch Denim Insulation and donated to communities in need. Shoppers can recycle their denim at more than 1,000 Gap stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Gap North America President Marka Hansen said, “Earlier this year, we partnered with Cotton Incorporated on their first ever national denim drive with a retailer, and it was met with such success that we wanted to give our customers another opportunity to recycle their old denim, help communities in need, and update their fall wardrobe with the latest 1969 jeans. FROM BLUE TO GREEN.’ merges the ideas of fashion, environmental sustainability and helping others.” I still want too see if you can get solar power from jeans.

A new twist on the Wall Street “greed is good concept” made famous by Michael Douglas in the first Wall Street movie. This is pretty funny and drives home the point about recycling and being green. John Shegerian, CEO of Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronics and e-waste said, “The ‘Green is Good’ video was filmed for laughs”“But the takeaway for the viewer couldn’t be more serious. Recycling is an integral part of preserving our natural resources and we hope that the video shorts we have created that are now floating around the internet will remind and inspire people to recycle responsibly.”
