Energy Secretary Steven Chu knows the power of waves

NA BE036 CHU G 20100204202452 300x200 Energy Secretary Steven Chu knows the power of wavesThe United States Secretary of Energy and Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Steven Chu, visited waves wallpaper 300x225 Energy Secretary Steven Chu knows the power of wavesthe headquarters of Irish wave energy development company, Wavebob Ltd. last Friday in Maynooth, Ireland and met with CEO Andrew Parish and his team. The visit follows the recent announcement that Wavebob Ltd. had secured a grant of $2.4 million from the US Department of Energy to support the company’s ongoing technical development in the US.

Secretary Chu is a vocal advocate of research into alternative energy sources. During a tour of the Wavebob facility, Secretary Chu and Parish discussed the massive potential of the global ocean energy resource and the potential to create a large new industry in the manufacture and supply of wave energy converter technology. Secretary Chu saw a demonstration of the Wavebob wave energy converter and learned how Wavebob is progressing its commercial agenda and securing a global reputation as a leading pioneer in this emerging sector.

CEO Parish believes that the Energy Secretary’s interest in Wavebob reflects a firm commitment to developing new sources of renewable energy. “This visit by Secretary Chu is certainly a tremendous boost to our company, and is of course a very great honor. More importantly though, Dr. Chu’s visit and his Department’s grant allocation of $2.4 million shows that the US government supports our work and is aware of the significant contribution that wave energy devices could make to the US energy market.”

Wavebob Ltd. has partnered with some of the most powerful players in the US energy sector and the company has been building up a presence in the US since the establishment of its US head office in Annapolis, Maryland in 2008. The $2.4 million US Department of Energy grant was allocated from a total fund of $37 million in marine and hydrokinetic energy grants.
Also last week, Secretary Chu visited the Marine Institute of Ireland in Galway. The Marine Institute of Ireland is the national agency responsible for marine R & D in Ireland, including ocean energy.

Geological Society goes solar

400px Hill 1897 GSAmeetingWVa 300x203 Geological Society goes solarThe Geological Society of America(GSA) recently celebrated the completion of a 65 kW solar energy system atop its Boulder, CO headquarters. Through it’s more than 22,000 members from academia, government, and industry in more than 97 countries the GSA encourages cooperative research among earth, life, planetary, and social scientists. The new array currently provides 35 percent of the annual electric consumption for the building, avoiding the emission of over 160,000 lbs of carbon dioxide each year.  By January 2011 the building will use 100% solar and wind renewable energy for it’s  source of electrical power.

It is very exciting to work with the GSA,” said Andrew McKenna, COO of Bella Energy the company that installed the solar power system. “My family has had a close connection to the organization for many years, as my father was a long-standing member. It is great to see that Bella Energy can help the GSA save money on electrical costs, and continue its environmental leadership efforts.” GSA Executive Director Jack Hess said “We are grateful for the availability of local funding from Xcel Energy and the City of Boulder to make this first of many investments in renewable energy possible for GSA. The Society is committed to demonstrating environmental leadership and we want other commercial and nonprofit entities to know that this funding exists.”

The Geological Society of America was  founded in 1888. Through its meetings, publications, and programs, GSA enhances the professional growth of its members and promotes the geosciences in the service of humankind.

The Power of India

india map 257x300 The Power of IndiaA new report called “Indian Power Sector Analysis”, indicates there is a huge demand for power in some Indian states due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. Electricity is vital  for economic development of a country. The Indian electricity market today offers one of the highest growth potential for private players. Government reforms will be the key factor driving the power sector. Reforms such as The Electricity Act and National Electricity Policy will give impetus to the Indian power sector.

The report conducted by RNCOS a leading market research firm also revealed that alternative energy sources such as nuclear, wind and solar will fulfill a large chunk of India’s energy needs in the coming years. Many states are formulating exclusive policies for renewable energies in order to promote and develop these energy sources. RNCOS E-Services’ report focuses on the growing power sector in India. It thoroughly investigates the current market trends, evolving markets and growth prospects for the power industry. It will help interested parties to analyze the driving forces and leading-edge opportunities critical to the success of the power industry.

Based on the study of the Indian power sector, the report discovered that the total installed capacity will add around 45000 MW by 2013-14. However, demand is much higher than supply with a deficit  projected to be more than 12% during 2010-11. The report also found that renewable energy creates huge opportunities for power generators as the commitment to generate clean energy and environmental obligations have become top priority for most of the nations around the world. However, coal based power will remain the dominant source for energy in India.

LISTEN TO QUESTPOINT N THE MIX

Is there really green in green jobs?

Winston Andrew 254x300 Is there really green in green jobs? That has been a recurring question. Given the current state of the economy. It is particularly interesting in retrospect to listen to an interview QuestPoint n The Mix had with leading author and Green Career Expert Carol McClelland last year where she lays out an assessment of where the green age is relative to the Industrial age.

In his article, “The Wrong Debate on Green Jobs” Environmental Strategist” and author Andrew Winston suggest, “A new green economy is just that – a whole new economy, with job openings at all skill levels, from truck drivers to inventors of new battery chemistry. The solar or wind installer is just the tip of a very large iceberg that’s coming our way.” Andrew Winston starts off

Wind turbine training for a new generation of energy

wind turbine eddy t 1 150x150 Is there really green in green jobs?Ask anyone knowledgeable about wind energy, and you’ll quickly learn that the latest “green” technology – despite a recent surge in public interest – is nothing new to union ironworkers. As more and more wind turbines are erected across the open plains, farmlands, and mountain ridges of the United States, the need for ironworkers with specialized construction skills has naturally grown, says the Iron Workers International Union.

In fact, ironworkers have been erecting wind turbines for decades. What is new is a need for independent certifications-driven largely by increased scrutiny of the wind energy sector – meant to improve safety and quality across the industry. In response, the Iron Workers International Union (www.ironworkers.org) – working with the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT) – is offering wind turbine training programs for union ironworkers to develop key construction skills. Through a new IMPACT (www.impact-net.org) program, certification in torque/tension and tower-climbing and safety procedures, including high-angle rescue procedures, comes from industry-recognized leaders, including
