Energy Crisis Deja Vu

Statement by the President After Meeting with BP Executives

THE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon, everybody.  I just concluded a constructive meeting with BP’s chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg, and I raised two issues at the meeting.  First was the containment of the oil that is still spewing into the Gulf.  As I mentioned last night, my administration has directed BP to mobilize additional equipment and technology, and in the coming days and weeks, these efforts should capture up to 90 percent of the oil that is leaking out of the well. Now, that’s not good enough.  So we will continue to press BP and draw on our best minds and resources to capture the rest of the oil until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that is expected to stop the leak completely.  The second topic revolved around the issue of claims.  As I traveled across the Gulf I heard growing frustration over the pace at which claims had been paid.  And I also heard concerns about whether BP will make resources available to cover legitimate claims resulting from this disaster.  So this discussion today was essential.

Currently, under federal law, there is a $75 million cap on how much oil companies could under certain circumstances be required to pay for economic damages resulting from a spill such as this.  That amount obviously would be insufficient.  That’s why I’m pleased to announce that BP has agreed to set aside $20 billion to pay claims for damages resulting from this spill.
s BP SMALL PEOPLE large300 150x150 Energy Crisis Deja VuThis $20 billion will provide substantial assurance that the claims people and businesses have will be honored.  It’s also important to emphasize this is not a cap.  The people of the Gulf have my commitment that BP will meet its obligations to them.  BP has publicly pledged to make good on the claims that it owes to the people in the Gulf, and so the agreement we reached sets up a financial and legal framework to do it.
Another important element is that this $20 billion fund will not be controlled by either BP or by the government.  It will be put in a escrow account, administered by an impartial, independent third party.  So if you or your business has suffered an economic loss as a result of this spill, you’ll be eligible to file a claim for part of this $20 billion.  This fund does not supersede either individuals’ rights or states’ rights to present claims in court.  BP will also continue to be liable for the environmental disaster it has caused, and we’re going to continue to work to make sure that they address it.Additionally, BP voluntarily agreed to establish a $100 million fund to compensate unemployed oil rig workers affected by the closure of the deepwater rigs.  We’ve mutually agreed that Ken Feinberg will run the independent claims process we’re putting in place.  And there will be a three-person panel to adjudicate claims that are turned down.  Every effort will be made to expedite these claims.  Ken has long experience in such matters, including running the fund that compensated the victims of 9/11.  And I’m confident he will ensure that claims are administered as quickly, as fairly, and as transparently as possible.

BP’s liabilities for this spill are significant — and they acknowledge that fact.  We will continue to hold BP and all other responsible parties accountable.  And I’m absolutely confident BP will be able to meet its obligations to the Gulf Coast and to the American people.  BP is a strong and viable company and it is in all of our interests that it remain so.  So what this is about is accountability.  At the end of the day, that’s what every American wants and expects.
The structure we’re establishing today is an important step towards making the people of the Gulf Coast whole again, but it’s not going to turn things around overnight.  And I want all Americans to know that I will continue to fight each and every day until the oil is contained, until businesses recover, and until the Gulf Coast bounces back from this tragedy, as I know it will. One last point.  During a private conversation with Chairman Svanberg I emphasized to him that for the families that I met with down in the Gulf, for the small business owners, for the fishermen, for the shrimpers, this is not just a matter of dollars and cents; that a lot of these folks don’t have a cushion.  They were coming off Rita and Katrina; coming off the worst economy that this country has seen since the Great Depression, and this season was going to be the season where they were going to be bouncing back.  Not only that, but this happened, from their perspective, at the worst possible time, because they’re making their entire income for the year in the three or four months during which folks can take their boats out, people are coming down for tourism.

And so I emphasized to the chairman that when he’s talking to shareholders, when he is in meetings in his boardroom, to keep in mind those individuals; that they are desperate; that some of them, if they don’t get relief quickly, may lose businesses that have been in their families for two or three generations.  And the chairman assured me that he would keep them in mind.

That’s going to be the standard by which I measure BP’s responsiveness.  I think today was a good start, and it should provide some assurance to some of the small business owners and individuals down in the Gulf who I was visiting with that BP is going to meet its responsibilities.  But I indicated to the chairman that, throughout this process, as we work to make sure that the Gulf is made whole once again, that the standard I’m going to be applying is whether or not those individuals I met with, their family members, those communities that are vulnerable, whether they are uppermost in the minds of all concerned.  That’s who we’re doing this work for. All right.  Thank you very much, everybody.

Dirty Energy Independence Week July 1 – July 7th, 2010

President Obama gave an address about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico — and what it teaches us about America’s economic and ecological future.
President Obama has heard and joined our call for bold, decisive action to clean up
the spill and build a safe, clean-energy future for the Gulf region and for America.
Now, we must help him and Congress turn his words into the change we need.

In his address, the president called the BP oil spill “the worst environmental
disaster America has ever faced.” He vowed to hold BP accountable for the terrible
damage it has caused. And he promised to remove the threat of future spills by
ending America’s dependence on oil and building a strong clean-energy sector that
can power our economy.

slide 7300 96533 large 300x120 Oh no you didntI don’t think most people get pleasure out of seeing photos of oil drenched sea birds, dolphins and miles of once beautiful beaches blackened by BP’s undersea hell hole poking. The environmental impact is just starting to be seen despite BP’s best efforts to restrict images coming out of the Gulf of Mexico. But for some it’s not about the principle of the thing, it’s about the money. And surely the economic impact will be felt for years… tourism, fishing the entire economy of the region has been poisoned and  is going to take an incredible hit.

Solar power & electric vehicle synergy

But what can we do? Electric vehicles, solar, wind, wave and a myriad of sustainable ventures offer a renewable and far less dangerous solution to what is currently going on. In fact take a look at the video of a Berkeley California family that’s been driving an electric vehicle for years now and uses solar panels to provide energy for their home. Toyota and Tesla Motors have just teamed up to start churning out a new line of electric cars. And Santa Rosa based ZAP recently won a contract with the US Post office to begin transitioning some of their fleet to electric. Others in EV business include Nissan LEAP, Mini – E, Volt and Coda. Even though the 2006 film Who Killed the Electric Car (see the trailer here) highlighted GM’s role destroying electric transportation. Electric vehicles have been around for at least 100 years.  ZAP also owns Thomas Edison’s  “electromobile” from 1910  and the Detroit Electric brand.

Question of the Day: What do the oil catastrophe and the Wall Street collapse have in common?
Three big things, I’d say.
In both cases, a powerful, politically protected industry invented something that could not easily be repaired when it broke. We seem to be entering an age when complex technologies, whether financial or physical, sometimes literally have no solutions when they go haywire in unanticipated ways. We thought this might happen with nuclear power (and it still could); but for now deepwater drilling is the bigger menace.

A hole poked into hell…23,000 feet below the ocean

r GULF OIL SATELLITE huge A hole poked into hell...23,000 feet below the ocean

One thing that’s consistent about humankind is our attraction to the sea. Since a large part of the human body is composed mostly of water and more than 70% of the world is covered by ocean…this may be natural.

The world’s water ways are key resources to our existence. It is not  without some irony that with respect to energy; it was only within the last two hundred years that man was hunting and killing whales and using their blubber to light the western world. That activity practically drove whales to the brink of extinction.

Today if we still did that it be considered primitive, barbaric! Yet there we were out in the world’s seas exterminating whales for their energy. Today here we are with our ingenious selves. I mean just the idea of  an oil rig sitting 5000 feet above the ocean floor and than drilling another 18,000 feet once you reach the ocean floor is a remarkable technological accomplishment…even if totally misdirected and deadly. Yet it clearly demonstrates the depths man will go to get what we want even if it leads to the environmental and economic catastrophe we now have on our hands.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

We have poked a hole into the earth under the ocean and now we are all seeing the hellish result. What on earth makes us think we couldt1main.underwater.bp 150x150 A hole poked into hell...23,000 feet below the ocean ever control something like this? How many times does mother nature have to check us and let us know who’s running the show? Scientist are now discovering undersea plumes of oil clouds that are 10 and 20 miles long headed for shorelines, underwater canyons and gulf streams that circulate around the world. Once and if this shows up on Miami Beach than maybe everyone will start to get it. In the new version of the Day the Earth Stood Still the scientist played by John Cleese pleads with alien, Klaatu played by Keanu Reeves to please give humans a second chance because as he argues, only when man is at the precipice of destruction can he change.

The evolution of technology in solar, wind, wave and other sustainable ventures now gives us smarter less toxic  ways to create a world where  we don’t do ourselves in through greed and arrogance.

39943a8022 201x300 Great music reigns for The Rainforest FoundationOne of the magical things about being an entertainer is the great things you can do for worthy causes. It’s as if they are one,  because they are. Artist of all kinds touch our senses and remind us of what’s of essence. That’s what Sting, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Bruce Springsteen and other star performers did at Carnegie Hall several days ago for the Rainforest Fund’s 21st birthday.

The New yorK performance is significant because it showcases a cause many of us around the globe are seeking… a more sustainable, cerebral and spiritual connection with the environment. California I was once told wasn’t just  a place, but a state of mind… like being in a New York state of mind. So too is being green…it’s also an emotional state tuned to the rhythm and rhyme of the planet. Hearing that beat we can dance into a better understanding of how to best utilize the renewable power of the sun, sea, wind and waves.

The event was produced by Sting’s wife Trudie Styler to support the Rainforest Foundation. Rainforests provide essential ecological benefits to all of humankind. They are also home to a vast number of cultures and societies who have lived close to the natural world for millennia. The Rainforest Foundation was the first international nonprofit to support indigenous peoples as a strategy for promoting social justice and halting the destruction of tropical forests worldwide.

No role for sun, wind or waves in American Power Act

images No role for sun, wind or waves in American Power Actphotoc 150x150 No role for sun, wind or waves in American Power Actimages 1 No role for sun, wind or waves in American Power Act
Environmentalist and scientists now suggest the size of the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion is four times what was originally estimated. Now it may finally be hitting the public just how big of a disaster we now have on our hands. It is interesting to note that there are  819 other oil rigs in the Gulf. Meanwhile another oil rig just sank off the coast of Venezuela.

So enter Senators John Kerry, and Joe Lieberman who recently introduced the American Power Act. And what an act it is. This bill will actually expands offshore drilling and they’re calling oil, coal and nucleur clean energy?. Is this green washing? You got to love it…are they paying attention to current events?Remember the heads of the tobacco industry ” cigarette smoking doesn’t cause cancer” What happened to the much stronger proposals put forth by Obama which called for 25% renewable energy by 2025? And the  Waxman/Markey bill which called for 15% renewable energy by 2020?

What’s happened in the Gulf isn’t a wake up call…the fire department is chopping down your door, the house is on fire…get out of the house.  Now that the risks of drilling in the ocean have been confirmed and we know the pollution that oil  causes,  shouldn’t this bill be modified to redirect resources to real clean renewable alternatives such as Solar, wind, wave, geo, hydro and biomass?

seagen completed 150x150 No role for sun, wind or waves in American Power ActTake for example in Ireland. Marine Current Turbines Ltd has secured approval for a lease from The Crown Estate to deploy its award-winning SeaGen tidal current technology off Brough Ness, on the southern most tip of the Orkney Islands (South Ronaldsay) and north east of John O’Groats. The company plans to have its first phase of SeaGen tidal turbines deployed during 2017 with the whole scheme operational by 2020.

Marine Current Turbines (MCT) is planning to install 66 SeaGen tidal turbines in three phases over a four year period in a site area of 4.3 square kilometres. The Brough Ness tidal array will have a total generating capacity of 99MW – enough power for nearly 100,000 homes.

SeaGen is the world-leading prototype tidal energy turbine designed and deployed by MCT. It is the largest grid-connected marine renewable energy system in the world and which last month exceeded 1000 hours of commercial operation in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough. It is the first tidal current energy system in the world to have achieved this milestone.

The 1.2MW tidal current turbine, which was deployed in April 2008, has achieved a capacity factor of 66% and so far delivered more than 800MWh of electricity into the National Grid.

Martin Wright, Managing Director of Marine Current Turbines said: “The Pentland Firth and Orkney waters are strategically the most important marine energy areas in Western Europe so we are delighted to have secured approval for a lease by The Crown Estate. I believe that MCT is in a very strong position to capitalise on this significant and challenging opportunity. MCT already has the valuable experience of deploying and operating SeaGen in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough and within the next two to three years we expect to have deployed our first tidal farm in UK waters.”

The tragedy of the oil rig explosion off the coast of Louisiana is unfortunately just beginning to impact a region already devastated by Katrina. As of this writing the size of the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico is almost the size of Texas. The magnitude of the engineering project that created this oil well under 5000 feet of water is truly a technological fete that can be marveled upon. Now though the big challenge is how to stop it. British Petroleum and Transocean the operators of Deepwater Horizon are attempting a number of low tech solutions to cut off this undersea gusher that already has dwarfed the size of the Exxon Valez oil spill in Prince Edward Sound Alaska back in 1989.

The thing about disasters – natural or man made, they always have victims. But the victims aren’t just wildlife, fragile coastlines or the economic hit which one way or another we’ll all feel; it is the staggering assault to our lack of initiative, imagination and creative capacity to move away from petroleum as the key source of our energy supply.

The new green age offers alternative clean and renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, wave, geo, hydro and biomass. How many more oil spills have to happen, how many more embargoes, and oil wars need to be fought before we get it? As the country begins serious debate on a new energy direction; it could be interesting to look at some of the old clips from the 1962 TV sitcom of Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies.
